Moving into a new home is one of life’s most powerful energetic shifts. As a Feng Shui practitioner, I’ve helped many clients find homes that align with their goals and natural energy—but this time, I had the opportunity to walk that journey myself. What unfolded was a deeply personal reminder that when your home and your intention align, life begins to flow with more ease, clarity, and joy.
This past spring, my husband and I made a big decision—it was time to shift and find a new home that reflected our next chapter. With three kids between us—two already out building their own lives and the youngest preparing to graduate high school—the energy of our home was shifting. We wanted a space that still felt welcoming when everyone was home, but peaceful and right-sized for when it was just the two of us and our pup. A home that supported the lifestyle we love—more connection, more ease, and more time outdoors.
As a Feng Shui practitioner, I see homes as living, breathing reflections of our lives. They hold our energy, amplify our opportunities, and quietly mirror our next stage of growth. So when it came time to choose our new home, I wasn’t just house-hunting—I was aligning our energy with our next chapter. And this time, I wasn’t guiding a client through the process… I was guiding us.
Setting Our Feng Shui Intentions
Of course, I had my list of specifics (my husband likes to joke that our realtor didn’t stand a chance of showing us anything random!). But these weren’t just aesthetic preferences—they were energetic requirements. Luckily, my husband and I share the same GUA number, which made finding our ideal orientation a little easier. A south-facing, north-sitting home is ideal for us—it supports health, abundance, and career growth. That bright sunshine from the South pouring through the front door every day welcomes opportunities for us.
When it comes to selecting a new home, I look for certain energetic patterns that signal harmony, balance, and lasting support. The way energy moves around a property directly influences how it flows within it.
Every property tells a story through its energy — the key is learning how to listen. These are six Feng Shui foundations I always keep in mind:
- Gentle Elevation for Strong Support
A home that sits slightly higher than its surroundings symbolizes stability and confidence. Ideally, the land rises gently behind the house—creating what we call mountain support. This natural backing gives you the sense that life is holding you up rather than pushing against you. - Open, Welcoming Flow at the Front
The area in front of the home should feel open, bright, and easy to approach. In Feng Shui, this is known as the bright hall—a gathering space for life-force energy (chi). A smooth, uncluttered path and balanced landscaping help opportunities flow effortlessly toward you. - Protective Embrace on All Sides
A well-positioned home feels gently held by its surroundings. Land or neighboring structures on the left and right act as supportive “arms,” while higher ground or tall trees behind form the “chair back.” This armchair formation protects the home’s energy and helps relationships and finances remain steady and supported. - Avoid Harsh or Rushing Energy
Steer clear of corner lots, T-junctions, or homes facing sharp rooflines, fences, or roadways. These direct or pointed forms create fast-moving or cutting chi that can bring agitation or instability. Choose a property that feels calm, protected, and gently cradled instead. - A Solid Back for Grounding
A fence, retaining wall, or natural rise behind the property provides energetic grounding and emotional stability. This steady support represents protection, privacy, and the quiet confidence to grow and thrive over time. - Choose a Healthy, Wealthy Home for You
Each person has a unique GUA number, revealing the directions that best support health, relationships, and prosperity. When possible, choose a home whose main orientation aligns with your best directions—creating a naturally “healthy and wealthy” environment that uplifts your energy from the moment you arrive.
Understanding these six foundations gave me incredible clarity during our home search—it helped me instantly sense which properties would support our energy and which ones simply wouldn’t. With that awareness, the process felt calm and intentional rather than overwhelming. We only viewed one home, and by the end of that same day, we put in an offer. When you’re aligned, the right home truly has a way of revealing itself with ease and confidence.
Choosing Flow Over Perfection
Even as a Feng Shui practitioner, I always remind clients: there’s no such thing as a perfect house—only homes that can be harmonized. The home we found checked almost every box. The only two real “concessions” were that the garage sat on the left side, and our bedroom was at the front. But the moment we walked through, I could feel its energy—bright, grounded, alive. The location was exactly where we wanted to be: surrounded by old trees, vibrant cafés, trails, and community energy.
My husband and I love to walk, bike, and enjoy time outdoors. We wanted a life that felt so good each day that we didn’t need vacations to feel renewed. This home offered that. And from a Feng Shui perspective, the timing couldn’t have been better—it’s a new build in Period 9, carrying powerful, auspicious energy for the next 20 years.
Releasing Before Moving
Before we even packed a single box, we spent significant time intentionally letting go. We opened bins, sorted through keepsakes, books, and photos, and asked: Does this still bring us joy? Many of these things once held sentimental meaning, but we realized they no longer matched who we are now. We thanked them, released them, and created space for new energy to arrive.
This step was so freeing. We weren’t just decluttering—we were releasing the past so our next chapter could unfold cleanly. When we moved in, every box felt light. There was no heaviness, no overwhelm. Just flow. The energy of our new home felt clear and full of possibility.
Settling In with Intention
When we first arrived, we didn’t rush to decorate. We simply lived in the space and listened. I always encourage my clients to feel the energy before making big decisions—it’s one of the most overlooked parts of creating alignment. We watched how the sunlight moved through the rooms and noticed where we naturally gravitated. Bit by bit, we placed our furniture, art, and décor intentionally to strengthen that natural flow.
The Energy of Art
Artwork holds energy—it tells stories, evokes emotion, and can completely shift how a space feels. When placing art, I always ask: Do you love it? If not, it’s time to release it. We recently invested in two beautiful landscape paintings from a local artist. Each piece carries all five elements: blue/black (Water), green (Wood), white (Metal), yellow/brown (Earth), and red/purple (Fire). This balance helps anchor harmony in our home.
One of my own paintings—a large, vibrant red piece I created years ago—represents strong Fire energy. Because our home faces South (the Fire direction), I chose to place it on the Southwest wall, which represents the matriarch and the Earth element. Fire feeds Earth, strengthening my own energy and grounding the home beautifully.
Designing for Flow and Balance
Every home has both supportive and challenging energies based on its Flying Star Feng Shui chart (a formula that uses the home’s facing direction and year built). Once I charted ours, I was able to enhance the auspicious stars and apply remedies to balance the less favorable ones. When challenging stars fall in bathrooms or closets—wonderful! We can simply close the door. But even if they appear in active spaces, remedies using the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water) can harmonize and soften them. That’s the beauty of Feng Shui—it doesn’t demand perfection. It meets your home exactly where it is and brings it back into balance.
“ When your space supports your energy, everything else begins to flow with greater ease, clarity, and joy. ”
Creating Workspaces that Support Success
One of the things I’m most grateful for in this new home is that my husband and I each have our own office spaces. Desk placement is key: you want to sit in a command position—facing the room with a solid wall behind you and a clear view of the door. It’s symbolic of seeing opportunities coming your way rather than turning your back to them.
In my own office, the first thing I added was a large natural jute rug. The light, earthy tone grounds the space, making it feel calm and stable. As I slowly furnish and decorate, I’m tuning in to how each corner feels before finalizing the layout.
I once worked with a client who had filled her office with several large plants. Although beautiful, she always felt drained. After reviewing her BaZi chart, we discovered she already had an abundance of Wood energy and actually needed more Earth and Metal. We made a few adjustments—keeping one plant, adding grounding tones and metallic accents—and the shift was immediate. When your environment mirrors what you personally need, everything in your life begins to flow more easily.
The Feeling of Home
It’s been about 4 months since we moved in, and every day still feels fresh. There’s this quiet joy when we walk through the front door—like the home is smiling back at us. We feel supported, grounded, and energized. It’s a reminder that when we live in harmony with our space, our lives feel lighter too.
This whole experience reaffirmed something I teach often: Feng Shui isn’t about perfection—it’s about presence. It’s about creating a home that reflects your energy, your story, and the life you’re consciously choosing to live.

What I Learned from Finding Our New Home with Feng Shui
This experience reminded me that Feng Shui is never about chasing perfection—it’s about cultivating presence and alignment. Our homes are living reflections of who we are and who we’re becoming. When we listen to what our environment is showing us, we can bring it—and ourselves—back into balance.
Finding and creating this home deepened my belief that when your space supports your energy, everything else begins to flow with greater ease, clarity, and joy. That’s the true power of Feng Shui—living in harmony with your surroundings so your home becomes a source of inspiration, not just a place to live.
